Here's what American Songwriter had to say about the song Truer Sound from my debut album:

Laura Mae Socks Searches For A “Truer Sound” On Debut Album
Written By Caine O'Rear // August 23, 2019

Earlier this month, Nashville singer-songwriter Laura Mae Socks released her debut album Where You Go, a long-gestating collection of hardcore honky-tonk numbers that was partly inspired by her rough-and-tumble childhood in West Virginia.
Socks comes by her country bona fides honestly. She grew up in a trailer without running water amid the economic desolation of Appalachia. Her father was a hay farmer and her mother was the “queen of the town weirdos,” a friend of Patsy Cline’s, and dogged by mental illness most of her life. Before reaching the age of 17 Socks had lived in a whopping 17 different houses and was at one point even taken away by social services.
It wasn’t until the death of her mother and her move to the Cajun country of Louisiana that she began writing songs. Those efforts continued with her move to Nashville years later and reached full flower this month with the release of Where You Go.
You can get a taste of the album below with the song “Truer Sound.” Here’s what Socks had to say about the tune’s formation:
“I am obsessed with the song ‘Windfall’ from Son Volt’s Trace. It reminds me of when I lived in Louisiana but I kept feeling drawn back to home, touring out of where I’m from in West Virginia half the time. I was living in my friend’s house and I began thinking about leaving Louisiana and moving back to the mountains. Growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the second there would be a chill in the air, I’d drive through the mountains all night with all the windows down and soak up that first bite of fall. I listened to ‘Windfall’ on repeat while I danced alone in the room until I wrote this song. I’m the kinda girl who plays songs till I wear them out.
I wanted to capture that nostalgic emotion of how “it’s unsettling to feel so unsettled and alone” — being somewhere physically, and somewhere completely different emotionally. When I wrote this song, I was dancing in “my room that’s not mine” at my friend’s house, yet my heart was driving through the mountains, breathing in that first taste of fall. I wrote, “Even my phone corrects ‘home’ to ‘gone.’” That just really resonated with me and I hope it does with everyone who listens.

I'm in the final stages of getting the album to press.  The photos are finished and the cover is (almost) picked and now i'm just getting the liner notes all taken care of and then it will be ready for ya'll.  Thanks again so much for supporting my album and pre-ordering through kickstarter.  Above is a photo taken this week by the talented Cassie Lopez.  She shot the cover of the album and is helping design the artwork.  Check her out.

The Record is DONE!  Also a little tour.

After 2 years, lots of voice memos, late nights and miles on our van the record is complete.  I repeat the record is complete!  It's off being mastered by the amazing Mike Nau and I'm cooking up a sweet video to make a kickstarter with to get this record on VINYL (my goal since I was 14).  It feels amazing and I couldn't have done it without so many people (who will be thanked hardcore in the giant liner notes of this 12" record!) So many people have supported me along the way and I am endlessly grateful to all the players, the people that open their home to us on tour and of course the fans who come out instead of staying home and watching Netflix (that's a feat in itself).

The record contains 13 songs (11 originals and 2 country standards).  I'll put some of the masters up on the website here in the next week.  Look for our kickstarter where you can pre-order your copy of the record on digital mp3, cd or vinyl (ahhhh!) very soon.

So on another note we are doing a little tour again here in November.  The dates are listed on the "shows" page.  Here they are as well:

Nov. 13 The Broad Ax Hagerstown, MD w/ The Plate Scrapers
Nov. 14  The Garryowen Irish Pub Gettysburg, PA
Nov. 15  Domestic Shepherdstown, WV
Nov. 18  El Gran Sabor Elkins, WV w/ Jesse Milnes on fiddle (OMG)
Nov. 20 Cristina's Cafe Strausburg, VA
Nov. 22 Parkway Brewing Salem, VA
Nov. 28 Boucherie Elton, LA

There's this awesome festival that is online only called Couch By Couchwest.  The idea behind it is that you don't have to leave your house and you can watch videos of musicians in their homes in your home instead of standing far back in a sea of people at a big outdoor festival.  Here's us doing just that:

Daily walks

I love rituals.  One of my most beloved daily rituals is walking with Maesy.  There aren't many choices for this walk out here in rural Louisiana but the sky changes and the weather is different every day giving a different feel.  Sometimes I'll throw the duck for Maesy in the crawfish ponds.  This day in particular felt different.  Almost like we should have been in Maine or somewhere else for sure.  It was warm but misty and very wet.

Walks are important when you're recording all day.

Back Home on the Prairie

We finally traveled back down South of the South to our home in Southern Louisiana after being on tour for a month.  We had a lot of great shows and stayed with some of the most wonderful and generous people.  We honestly couldn't do it without them.

We're just here getting ready for Mardi Gras and making lots of food and taking names.  The biggest goal is to mix the record and have it ready in the near future.  We're working hard.  It's so close I can taste it.

In the meantime i'm taking photos and working on songs so I figured I'd share some of my photos.  A little known fact is I was a photographer in a past life.
